Fixtures Cancellation

Due to the inclement weather conditions, both today’s hockey and soccer fixtures against Sedbergh Primary School have been cancelled.

Joe Bird Represents the Senior School in National Relays

Sedbergh Junior School’s Joe Bird had the honour of running for Sedbergh Senior School on Wednesday in the King Henry VIII Relays, a National Competition at the War Memorial Park, Coventry. Sedbergh A team put in an outstanding performance to finish 4th against some very big schools. Joe was running for the B team, and after a good first leg from Dan Jones (13.24), Joe ran the second fastest leg for the B team (13.35) to maintain the team’s position. This was an outstanding performance from Joe, considering he was running against boy’s up to 5 years older than him, and duly rewarding the faith that Mr Richardson (Head of Running at the Senior School) had in him. The B team eventually came in 24th out of 50 teams that started the race. Mr Richardson commented afterwards not only on how well Joe had run, but also on the way he had conducted himself for the whole trip. Joe’s next run is for Cumbria on Saturday, at Kirkby Stephen, along with Josh Hodge and Richard Burns. RTG

Sowerby Takes on Scotland

Nick has been back in action once again with the North of England squad heading over the boarder to Archerfield Golf Club in Berwick, where they took on their Scottish Counterparts. This tournament format was a 4 ball better ball match with Nick and his partner, playing two older Scottish boys. Nick and his partner set off really well and were quickly 2 up, they extended this two 3 up through 6 they had a small blip on 9 & 10 with the two Scots boys getting within one, but Nick and his partner, with some accurate driving and stunning iron shots, re-established their lead eventually running out comfortable winners 5 & 3. Yet another sensational experience for Nick, the North Of England Squad emerged victorious with a 8 Points to 3 final score to take the annual trophy.

Rawthey Run Results

alt

Wet and cold weather, with atrocious under foot conditions, greeted runners from all over the North of England for the annual Rawthey Run on Thursday. Nearly 400 athletes took part, with SJS providing 54 of them. It was great to see Tilly Webster running again in the Under 11 girls race, after some bad health, and she put in a terrific performance to finish 5th. Lucy Bailey was next home in 21st, as all the girls put their heads down and kept going in the tricky conditions.

Chris Park-Johnson found some very useful runners to compete against in the Under 11 race, and he fought to the end to finish 5th, only 8 seconds behind 2nd place. Gabe Connolly put in another gritty performance to come in 14th. Jack Roper (28th), Will Mullins (43rd) and Tristan Duncan (53rd) completed the counters for the team event, with SJS coming a creditable 5th. Geordan Moss, running for the B team, deserves a special mention for finishing ahead of half the SJS A team.

Rebecca Holliday showed what a talent she is in the Under 13 girls race by finishing 2nd in a good field. The run of Sally Bennett in 5th was without the doubt the performance of the day from the SJS girls, and together with Rebecca, Tabitha Holdsworth (11th), Pollyanna Bell (21st) and Lara Burch (27th) the girls finished a fantastic second in the team event, behind Giggleswick. All these girls are Year 7 which bodes well for next year.

The final race of the day was the Under 13 boys race, where Joe Bird and the team were both looking for a hat trick of wins from Ampleforth, Giggleswick and the Rawthey.  Joe set his stall out from the off, pulling away on the first hill, and he never really looked troubled as he won comfortably. This is becoming the norm for Joe now, but it should never be underestimated what a feat it is to win all 3 of these prestigious races. Josh Hodge (4th) had another storming run, captain Harry Heathcote (12th) showed real determination, and the rest of the team, Richard Burns (14th), Jonathon Mason (17th), Luke Worrall-Thomson (18th) and Henry Holdsworth (20th) had their own titanic battle, to make sure that the boys won the team prize comfortably ahead of St. Mary’s Hall and Barnard Castle. Ben Hunt, running for the C team, had a fantastic run to be the next SJS finisher, ahead of all the B team. Not bad for a prop forward!

These are the sort of days that will live long in the memory for all the runners, and all the SJS competitors deserve a mention for their endeavours.
