Sedbergh Senior School Image

Art & Design

The aim of studying Art at Sedbergh is to give each pupil as wide and as varied an experience of art and art practices as possible, to enable each individual to fulfil his or her potential. Art can stimulate a striving for perfection and an admiration for the skills and vision of others, from the old masters to our immediate contemporaries. Art cultivates our senses, making us visually aware and visually literate, enabling us to interpret the world around us.

The aims and objectives of the Art department fall into four categories:

  • Visual literacy – encouraging imaginative and perceptual abilities and developing skills in a variety of media
  • Visual awareness – developing an understanding of the role of art in the world at large
  • Understanding, communication and appreciation
  • Promotion and support of the arts in society, both at School and beyond.

The GCSE course is made up of course work (60%) and a controlled test (40%) with a four-week preparatory period. The curriculum provides the opportunity to study one or more of drawing and painting, sculpture and ceramics and photography and printmaking may also be incorporated.

A-level

The two courses available in the Sixth Form are designed to appeal to both academic students, who wish to pursue Art as one of several other A-levels, and especially those who have already decided on a career in Art and Design. Both courses ' Fine Art and Graphic Design ' are very different in emphasis but have many common fundamental principles.

Art and Design (Fine Art)

Studying ONE or more of

  • Painting and Drawing
  • Sculpture
  • Ceramics

Art and Design (Graphic Design)

Students are introduced to a variety of experiences exploring a range of graphics media and techniques.

Photography and Printmaking may be added as a component of Fine Art or Graphic Design and it is hoped that courses can be tailored to suit individual candidates' strengths as well as those of the department.
