Curriculum Summary

A broad-based curriculum is followed, reflecting the National Curriculum but extending well beyond its boundaries. Departments will adapt and enhance their programmes of study to ensure that every pupil is motivated, inspired and challenged. We aim to provide the enrichment and challenge which will prepare pupils for Common Entrance and scholarships at a pace and level appropriate to their needs.

Classes are small and streaming and setting are used from Year 6 onwards in English and Maths. Thus children can perform at the speed that suits them best and a very individual approach can be offered to every child.

At every level, we strive to make our pupils independent learners, well-prepared for the next stage in their development. By Years 7 and 8 the curriculum is planned largely, though not entirely, according to the Scholarship and Common Entrance requirements of the leading independent senior schools.

Our approach is designed to help pupils:

  • enjoy a happy and secure learning environment where they are valued
  • develop lively, enquiring minds where they question rather than merely accept
  • acquire knowledge and understanding which will equip them for future challenges
  • obtain skills that they can transfer to other subjects or situations

To this end, we are one of the early adopters of the new Independent Curriculum (IC). Through its unique design, the Independent Curriculum juxtaposes knowledge strands with cross-curricular learning skills and qualities for life, thus facilitating opportunities for the children to discover, apply and communicate what they have learned at every step. It is more than a list of content to be memorised; it is a scheme of work that promotes active engagement, creativity and independent learning in the classroom. This will prepare pupils for the demands of the modern workplace and the challenges that they will face in later life.
