EAL

At Sedbergh Prep we are able to welcome pupils for whom English is an Additional Language (EAL) if we believe that, with support, the pupils can access the curriculum.  Prior to enrolment pupils will be asked to sit a placement test which will be used to help us identify their language needs.  Once enrolled the EAL teacher will assess the pupil’s needs further and relevant withdrawal support lessons will be timetabled.  These lessons will either be individual or group lessons.  At times, the EAL teacher may also provide support in the subject classes. The individual needs of each pupil are considered when support lessons are arranged. Lessons are timetabled in place of subject classes at times where it causes the least disruption to mainstream teaching.  At times, lessons may take place during lunch break.

If an underlying learning difficulty is apparent the EAL teacher will refer to the Individual Needs Policy and communicate any concerns with the Head of Individual Needs.

Our EAL programme aims;

  • To help pupils develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English and to encourage students to use these skills

  • To provide pupils with the opportunity to learn language in an active way, building on natural motivation and interests

  • To provide language that is meaningful to situations in which pupils find themselves, and to give them the opportunity and freedom to communicate their own ideas, feelings and experiences

  • To help pupils gain confidence to use their acquired language to access the academic programme, to socialise with their peers and participate in the wider school environment

  • To help pupils widen vocabulary and master both sentence structure and the basic elements of English grammar so that they can more easily understand the texts used in their subject classes

  • To encourage reading, both within and outside the classroom, in English and their first language/s

  • To promote a sense of achievement and confidence in pupils so that they can understand and make themselves understood

  • To enable pupils to self-identify as valued members of our school community
