Individual Music Lessons

Pupil playing the saxophone

Many children receive additional paid music tuition on instruments of their choice, given on a 1:1 basis by experts. A wide range of instruments is taught, covering orchestral and band instruments, popular and orchestral percussion, bagpipes, harp, voice and piano. Every music teacher is of the highest calibre and almost all teach only their speciality, rather than a whole family of instruments, in order to give the highest level of expertise to pupils. All are graduates of top music schools, colleges, conservatoires or universities. Music teachers are all DBS checked and trained in Child Protection prior to teaching at Sedbergh Prep and are experienced in the education of young children. Several staff teach their instruments in both the prep and the senior schools, so continuity of teaching is ensured.

Music practice and environment

Progress in instrumental and vocal performance requires dedication. In order to reach high standards of performance, regular practice and diligence are needed. Young people, especially those just setting out on their musical journeys, require a great deal of assistance with understanding how to practise. At Sedbergh Prep we offer this support in a variety of ways, including supervised music practice for boarders with help and advice given by music specialists, practice diaries for all pupils and exceptional facilities: a dedicated music suite with 15 practice rooms (each with piano); a further 15 pianos across the school; an exceptional Yamaha grand piano for concerts; baby grand piano; a wealth of percussion, folk, band and orchestral instruments for loan; 2 music technology suites and an extensive music library and listening room.
