STEM DAY ROCKETS TO SUCCESS

Year 6 pupils from St Mary’s Kirkby Lonsdale joined us for an exciting day of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Combining creativity and flair with knowledge and understanding, STEM brought together a fun and challenging day for all involved. The morning was spent designing and engineering their own air-powered rockets, which led to the all-important launch in the Sports Hall. Pupils learnt the importance of design and aerodynamics as well as showcasing their eye for detail to ensure their rocket went as far as possible. We were even lucky enough to witness a new record being set, with one rocket travelling an impressive 34 metres!

The afternoon session introduced a new challenge for the pupils. In their small groups, each group had to build a tower that balanced both height and strength. Designed to hold the weight of a cricket ball, the towers were then really put to the test. Could they survive under attack from the air-powered rockets? All the groups demonstrated excellent teamwork when building their towers, with lots of imaginative and well-thought out designs.

We would like to thank St Mary’s CE Primary School Kirkby Lonsdale for attending the STEM Day. The pupils all displayed excellent teamwork, communication, knowledge and creativity and thoroughly impressed the staff at Sedbergh Prep School.
