It was set to be another thrilling sports encounter with Ampleforth. Sedbergh came out on top over the weekend with some exceptional individual performances.
The 1st XI soccer team played its first match of the term after Arctic weather conditions cancelled previous matches with a typically hard fought match. Despite the ground being thick and heavy, Sedbergh managed to pass the ball about with great confidence. Two superb balls from captain Joe McCluskie (S) allowed Barrett (P) and Stuart (P) to put the home side 2-0 at half time. Midfield dynamo Cameron Mitchell (P) performed outstandingly with his dynamic pace on the right wing setting up Dowling Kennedy (W) for the final goal. It was an encouraging first performance by Sedbergh, with the final result, 3-1 to Sedbergh.
In the 1st V Squash fixture, Sinclair (W) missed out on the opportunity to prove his worth as a result of his opponent's sprained ankle. Barker (E) played well at number 4, coming back with determination after the first and third games to win his match. Captain, Dean Bell (P) finished the match in confident style, although not all the crowd-pleasing shots stayed above the tin. Despite these mistakes he turned around the score of last week’s fixture against Barnard Castle to secure the 1st V victory for Sedbergh.
The 1st XI Boys' Hockey started the season by playing in the Cumbria Sunday association league. Currently the boys have played 7 matches and only lost 1 match against Kirkby Stephen. The boys scored over 30 goals with Josh Reed (SH) scoring 11 goals. This weekend Sedbergh put on a fine performance against a strong and experienced Ampleforth side coming out in the end with a 1-1 draw courtesy of a fantastic flick from Josh Reed (SH) in the final 5 minutes.
The season has gone from strength to strength for the Boys' Hockey, getting through to the North west semi finals after winning their pool in the County round. Sedbergh was well represented at the regional trials, Angus Donald(SH) played for the U18 Durham Pumas and Robert Radcliffe(H) and Ben Stewart(SH) represented the U15 Leeds Pumas. Ben Stewart was selected to attend the national High Performance centre during last October.
