9STAR at SEDBERGH


The concept of 9 STAR at Sedbergh, a new programme launching for our top academic scholars in Year 9, captured the imagination of a cohort of our teachers, many of whom found that their intellectual interest had been satisfied only when they went to study at Oxford or Cambridge University, or other leading universities. These teachers wish that they had experienced this opportunity when they were in Year 9 and have driven the content of this unique academic course.

We propose a new paradigm for our top Scholars in Year 9. Instead of it being a foundation year, it becomes a year of diversity and an opportunity for pupils to discover new subject areas, new ways of thinking, problem solving and communicating.

The core subjects of Maths, English, Science and a Modern Foreign Language remain critical and diversity of ability is provided for through traditional setting. This constitutes 50 per cent of the curriculum. The traditional curriculum model then provides small blocks of time for a wide range of subjects including the humanities and creative arts.  9 STAR is a programme which moves away from the knowledge-based curriculum to one which is founded upon the ability to think logically and express opinions on a wide range of subjects, the ability to conceptualise ideas, plan, solve problems and revise methodology in the light of experience, and it creates a framework to understand how learning develops. Beyond this, the pupils also learn about the importance of commercial and entrepreneurial behaviour.

The 9 STAR programme will represent 10 per cent of curriculum time. Pupils will undertake the following study:

Philosophy: An introduction to the history and principles of Philosophy including a study of the Renaissance period and key figures within it.

Skills: An introduction to high levels of writing, research and referencing. A regular programme of problem solving geared towards mental agility.

Theory of Knowledge: A course in the Theory of Knowledge which considers the evolution of Knowledge, changes in this process and its progress today.

Business: Studies of business and product development models leading to group development of a product to be brought to market and presented to award-winning entrepreneurs for consideration.

9 STAR is designed to suit a small group of pupils with certain characteristics who should show prior evidence of mastery of the core subjects, motivation and organisation, and evidence of previous independent study.

The knowledge and skills that 9 STAR pupils will gain will enable them to acquire knowledge at a faster rate than their peers and thereby fill any gaps arising from differences in their curricular experience from their peers. They will have the confidence to step outside the mainstream curriculum for a part of their education and know that they will be able to return to examination classes without detriment.

9 STAR  AND BEYOND

9 STAR is just the beginning of a programme that weaves its way throughout a Sedbergh education. As pupils progress into Year 10 we anticipate they may join the Oxbridge Development Programme which enters its third year. The core of this is a week’s study at Fitzwilliam College Cambridge. Pupils complete a week’s school work in a day, research a topic of their own choosing with the help of librarians, post-graduate students and a Sedbergh teacher, and explore this most beautiful medieval city. During the evenings, pupils participate in university events, such as concerts and lectures. They also have the opportunity to meet a College admissions tutor. All those who have embarked on this programme have returned enthused by what has been a life-changing experience. The group continues to develop its research and pupils present their findings to an audience of senior scholars and staff. Jonathan Lidiard

Dan Harrison is Deputy Head (Academic) and has been instrumental in the launch of the 9 STAR programme. A graduate in Natural Sciences from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, he went on to do a PGCE in Chemistry, also at Cambridge, and has a particular interest in the History and Philosophy of Science. Dan masterminded the Oxbridge programme at Sedbergh between 1996 and 2000.
Rev Paul Sweeting is the School Chaplain. He teaches Religious Studies, Physics and Mathematics. He seems to have collected degrees that begin with a ‘Theo’ – Theoretical Physics BSC from Lancaster University and a BA in Theology and Ministry from Durham University. He has a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics from S. Martin’s College, Lancaster and has a particular interest in the theology of Kierkegaard.
Jonathan Lidiard is Head of Classics and studied at Oriel College, Oxford. He teaches Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation. He has also worked as a subject tutor for the University of Buckingham PGCE course, mentoring trainee Classics teachers. His main Classical interests are Greek Tragedy and the philosophy of Aristotle. History of Art is also a burgeoning area of interest.

Naomi Lidiard

Andrew Loughe took his Undergrad MA in French and German at University of Edinburgh, then went on to study a Postgrad MSc in European Film Studies (Edinburgh) and a PGCE (MFL) at Keble College, Oxford University. He teaches French and German from beginner to Oxbridge level and enjoys teaching film as an A2 cultural topic. His particular interest is in early cinema and the differences between Hollywood cinema and the art house European from the 1940s-1990s. He is also an examiner and team leader for IGCSE for Cambridge.

Andrew Hollingbury studied Classics at Oriel College, Oxford University, and teaches Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation. He also runs the School’s Academic Enrichment programme for Years 9 to 11. His particular interests include ancient drama and the philosophy of cognitive science. Before teaching he spent several years working in the international theatre industry, notably for Sir Cameron Mackintosh and Matthew Bourne, while studying Japanese at SOAS in London. Naomi Lidiard studied Classics and English at Oriel College, Oxford University. She also has an LLB from the College of Law and trained in Corporate, Media, Private Client and Urban Regeneration Law. Naomi now teaches Latin and Classical Civilisation both at Sedbergh School and to younger pupils at Casterton, Sedbergh Preparatory School. She is interested in theatre, in particular the development of Tragedy and Comedy from their ancient roots. She hopes to offer an 'on-the-spot' literary criticism class.

Lotte Wright is Assistant Headmistress and Housemistress of Lupton. A Morehead-Cain Scholar at The University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hill, she has a BA in English Literature with Highest Distinction, a PGCE from the University of Buckingham (English) and is currently set to complete an MBA (Education) from Keele University. Lotte’s main contribution to the 9 STAR programme will be ‘Game Theory’.


Dr Gareth Downes is Head of English and is an expert on twentieth-century literature and modernism. Earlier this year he was a speaker at Dylan Unchained: The Dylan Thomas Centenary Conference at Swansea University. He obtained his BA and MA degrees in English Literature from Swansea University before being awarded a PhD from St Andrews University for a thesis on James Joyce. He has published essays, articles and book chapters on James Joyce and David Jones in a number of scholarly journals and collections.

Sally-Ann Griffin is Director of Middle School Studies and was the founder of the Middle School Phoenix Society. She is a graduate of Reading University with a BA (Hons) in English and a PGCE also from Reading. She has taught in a wide variety of schools and taken Master’s level courses including an Advanced Diploma in Education and a qualification in Literacy and Learning as well as a certificate in Curriculum Development. She has also enjoyed a variety of courses in Christianity including an extra mural course at Wycliffe Hall in Theology.
