Charity & Volunteering

Community service and fundraising are recognised as important parts of the School's extra-curricular activities.

Throughout the year, all pupils in Years 10, 11 and Lower Sixth are involved in the CCF, voluntary service or a recognised programme of extra-curricular activities. Voluntary service placements are diverse and, where possible, are matched closely to the specific interests and abilities of pupils.

Conservation on campus

The School has three conservation sites on its estate which are maintained and managed by Staff and pupils.

Charities and fundraising

In addition, Houses and the School as a whole hold frequent fundraising events for charities and the School has supported projects ranging from tsunami relief and cancer research to replacement windows for a Bulgarian orphanage and funds for the children's hospice at Chorley in Lancashire.

Sedbergh has a particularly strong relationship with The Wooden Spoon Society, the charity of British rugby, founded in 1983. Through various events we raised £17 000 in 2004, with help from the town, parents and Old Sedberghians, and this was match-funded by The Wooden Spoon Society to buy a specially-equipped minibus for the Bendrigg Trust. Bendrigg Lodge, one of the Trust's outdoor activity centres for disabled and disadvantaged young people, is just a few miles from the School at Killington Reservoir and "our" minibus is frequently seen in and around the area.
