Remembrance Sunday 2018

Letter from the Principal, 9th November 2018:

Dear Parents

As you will be aware, the School is preparing for Remembrance Sunday. We have already seen some spectacular art installations around the country which honour those who have died in conflict. Our pupils have created a major piece of artwork under the direction of the Art Department in the form of nine giant poppies, one for each House, which have been installed on the outer wall of the Memorial Cloisters and will remain there throughout next week.

Our Service on Remembrance Sunday is always poignant as the entire School congregates, exposed to the elements, around the lawns outside the main School building to remember the 258 Sedberghians who died in the First World War and those who have died in conflict since then. This year it will be especially significant as we reflect on the centenary of the ceasefire which brought the First World War to an end. We very much hope that you will join us on Sunday and the purpose of this letter is to ensure that you have the necessary information to enable the Service to progress smoothly:

1. Please dress warmly and be prepared for heavy rain. Umbrellas are used in the Service.
2. The congregation remains standing during the Service, although there are chairs available for those who need them during the Service.
3. Please arrive at the main School building at 10.15am. We do not encourage you to arrive earlier as you will be standing outside. Everyone should please be in place by 10.30am.
4. Please park in House Yards or other areas of car-parking; the car-park behind the main School building will become full very quickly.
5. The main gates will be closed at 10.30am to avoid any interruption to the Service by latecomers.
6. Orders of Service will be provided on arrival.

On this occasion, we are joined by the Royal Horse Artillery who will fire a salute at the start and end of the two minutes' silence. This will be highlighted in the Order of Service, please do be prepared for the noise.

After the Service we hope you will enjoy a moment of reflection in the Cloisters and a warm cup of coffee in Queen's Hall.

Parents are also invited to our Concert of Remembrance, which will be held at 6.00pm in Powell Hall on the Sunday evening. The event will be a mixture of music, imagery and words to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day and will last for around an hour. Tickets are free and should be booked through https://www.trybooking.eo.uk/GNM

With best wishes.

Yours sincerely

Andrew Fleck
