The aim of Geography at Sedbergh Junior School is to make children interested and more aware of the world in which they live.
Pupils are encouraged to learn more about the physical world as well as exploring how humans interact with it and affect it. This then develops into a greater awareness of different societies and cultures as well as an appreciation and tolerance of diversity.
Learning facts, developing skills
All year groups study both physical and human geography each year and are encouraged to look at maps and develop their global location knowledge within every topic. Knowledge of geographical patterns and processes improves as pupils are taught both investigative and problem-solving skills and given tools to explore and understand their world.
Pupils are taught in a variety of ways; teacher-directed, resource-based with questions, group work, enquiry and project work as well as through application of ICT. In addition, the classroom has a selection of books, magazines and other resources, displays of pupils’ work and a board of newsworthy items to bring a study of geography into current affairs and today’s real world.

Visits and fieldwork
Geography is taught both in and outside the classroom and we aim for all children to undertake some form of fieldwork in each of Years 6, 7 and 8, especially as pupils in Year 8 are required to produce a major piece of geography fieldwork study as part of the Common Entrance process.
Other visits are arranged locally or regionally to tie in with particular topics of study. We are fortunate to be located in a rich and varied physical environment with both the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District on our doorstep, offering plenty of opportunities for fieldwork and studies.
