Our pupils come from a wide variety of backgrounds, schools and nurseries and Sedbergh Junior School caters for local day pupils, full-time boarding pupils from overseas and every possible combination of daily, weekly and occasional boarders.
These cover the whole age range of the School from 4 to 13 years and about half of the pupils are boarders. See the relevant page on this website for more detailed information on our excellent boarding provision.
Pre-Prep
Younger pupils joining Reception and Years 1 and 2 are taught in Danson House which is within the grounds of the Junior School. Although childcare is available for the full school day, younger day pupils can be collected at 3.30pm and indeed any time up until 5.15pm.
Prep School
Years 6, 7 and 8 have lessons on Saturday mornings with team sports on Saturday afternoons for all ages.
Most pupils average over eight hours of exercise and two hours of music each week as well as their studies and some time to relax with their friends, creating a structured and secure framework for them to learn, grow and develop.
Serving the SJS community
Commitment is an important quality for our children to develop and at Sedbergh Junior School we give our Year 8 pupils the opportunity to show that they are prepared to do something for the benefit of the SJS community.
The ‘S’ Team stands for ‘Service at Sedbergh’.
Each Year 8 child has the opportunity to formally apply for at least one role which they feel they will be able to carry out with enthusiasm and dedication for the whole year to serve the SJS community and there are enough roles for everyone in Year 8.
This system replaces the more traditional Prefect system which we feel does not allow enough children to contribute to the development of SJS. The ‘S’ team is inclusive and allows all Year 8 children to be proactive in their service of SJS. The standards of behaviour expected of the ‘S’ Team will be the same as would be for Prefects.
Once a Year 8 child has been appointed to join the ‘S’ Team they will wear a badge which has be presented to them in Assembly. Their success will be announced in the weekly Newsletter as well as on the SJS website.
