With ducks and a passing herd of hippopotami enjoying the pleasures of Lake Akay the Under 11 rugby team were at a bit of a loose end with the cancellation of their fixture against Packwood. However, a cunning plan was hatched to conquer Winder. The intrepid U9’s were keen to join the party as were the U13 girls. A rain squall whilst still in the changing rooms didn’t dampen enthusiasm fortunately and we set off under blue skies.

The way up was marked by diversions to play in the snow and to leap the watercourses. On arriving at the top the wind had picked up but the view was still excellent with all of Sedbergh and the surrounding area spread below us.

On the horizon though a dark cloud lurked and we decided to take the quick way down. This of course proved extremely popular as the snow provided an excellent medium for rapid descent of the hill. As we dropped below the snowline it was found that the grass was still slick enough for the ‘sledging’ to continue.

The hardest part of the day proved to be stopping the pupils going back up the last slope just so that they had the opportunity to come down again.
This ascent of Winder has seen a number of boys and girls reach the summit for the first time, a rite of passage at Sedbergh school has been achieved. Well done to all involved.
