We hold an organised Open Morning each term throughout the academic year, the dates of which will be publicised in advance. However, in order to ensure interested families can visit the school at a convenient time for them, at Sedbergh Prep EVERY DAY IS OPEN DAY!

Children wishing to enter the Preparatory School will normally spend a taster day with their year group and be assessed by their subject teachers. An assessment interview with English, maths and cognitive ability tests will also be given from Year 6 upwards. Pupils can start at any age from the term that they turn 3 through to 13, although parents who are intending their child to move on to the Senior School should be aware that places are at a premium and an early entrance to the Preparatory School would be beneficial. A range of Awards are available for talented boys and girls entering the Preparatory School, at age 11 i.e. as they transition between Year 6 and 7. Scholarships are our highest award, whilst exhibitions are awarded to those pupils close to gaining a scholarship.
Our Scholarship assessments are designed as an information gathering process for us as a School. We aim for the children attending to enjoy themselves without experiencing any undue pressure or anxiety. The academic scholarship papers at the Preparatory School are internal examinations appropriate to the age of the candidates. Papers will be set in mathematics, english and science. In addition, all candidates will sit cognitive ability tests.
All-Rounder scholarships and exhibitions at the Preparatory School are offered to boys and girls who show some academic ability combined with potential in two other areas from: art, drama, music or sport.
Art scholarships at the Preparatory School are awarded for outstanding performance in the visual arts. Candidates should bring with them any pieces of art they wish to show and/or discuss.
DESIGN TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING
Design, technology and engineering scholarships at the Preparatory School are awarded for outstanding performance in design, technology or engineering. candidates should bring with them a portfolio of design work, which can include the rich history of design, an understanding of iconic design, design ideas, development sketches and/or models, technical skills, craftsmanship, CAD work, innovation, manufactured work completed outside of school or work that displays engineering principles.
A practical examination will be set by the Preparatory School according to the age of the pupil. This will involve playing two musical instruments or playing one instrument and singing. There will also be a sight-reading test, aural tests including sight-singing, and an informal interview. Candidates should bring their own instruments and music.
Sports Awards are based on an assessment at the Preparatory School but it is also necessary to provide evidence of achievements to date and references from previous teachers or coaches at school and/or club levels.
