Individual Needs

Individual Needs

Learning support in the Prep School is known as ‘Individual Needs’. Our Individual Needs Department works across our school to ensure that all pupils receive the support that they need for effective learning and maximum development. Provision is tailored to meet the needs of the individual. The department works across all ages to help with both continuity of provision and the development of a close working relationship between staff, pupils and their parents. The department is staffed by trained specialist teachers, suitably qualified and experienced to meet the needs of the pupils requiring additional support. Where individual needs are identified, extra support and intervention can be provided either in class, in small group or individual lessons. Should any child applying to the school already have an identified Special Educational Need or Disability, relevant reports should be submitted for consideration as part of the admissions process.

Individual Needs provision also supports those pupils needing stretch and challenge opportunities. These pupils are capable of working at a significantly higher cognitive level than their peers in some subjects, whilst still developing socially and emotionally alongside their peers. By stimulating and providing challenges for all pupils we develop the thinking of all pupils.

The Prep School also provides support for international pupils for whom English is not the first language. As far as possible pupils are integrated into mainstream classrooms, where all teachers have a responsibility to support the needs of pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL). The IN Department also maintains a pastoral emphasis, working closely with other staff to ensure the wellbeing of international pupils and encouraging them to participate fully in the wide range of extra-curricular activities and events on offer.
