Netball and hockey are run consecutively throughout the Michaelmas and Lent terms and rounders, tennis and athletics are run in the Summer Term. Prep School staff coach the school teams but in addition to this the girls are fortunate to be coached by the Director of Girls’ Sport who is ex-England Netball international, Lucia Sdao. Lucia has 101 England caps, World Championship and Commonwealth Games medals and is currently a National Selector.
Lucia runs netball throughout the Senior School and at the Summer Sports Academies. Martin Speight is Director of Hockey at Sedbergh School and coaches hockey to both the girls and boys throughout both the Senior and Prep School. This ensures continuity of coaching throughout the entire school and input from the highest level.
All girls enjoy the opportunity to play representative sport, regardless of ability. There is a full and extensive programme of fixtures in all sports. All Y7 and 8 girls are invited to go on tour to Scotland to encourage the further development of the standard of play and to provide an opportunity for the girls to enjoy being part of a team, regardless of their level of play. Tournaments are held annually at Sedbergh and the Prep School teams are invited to several tournaments run by other schools. These events provide competition at the highest level available and improve their standard of play. Our 1st Netball team have qualified for National Prep School Netball finals for the last three years.
Tennis lessons continue to be incredibly popular with lessons delivered by Cumbria County Boys Coach Jon Griffin and his coaching team to pupils from Reception to Year 8. Lessons are available all year round and at present 61 pupils are undertaking weekly group lessons and 30 private lessons are also undertaken each week. The overall standard is certainly improving with all four courts full during break, lunch and evenings during the summer term. Both boys and girls fixtures are also played in the summer.
