Girls’ Sport

Hockey

Netball hockey and cross country are the main girls' sports throughout the Michaelmas and Lent terms, whilst cricket, athletics, rounders and tennis take centre stage in the Summer Term. Swimming, shooting and sailing also take place as appropriate throughout the year. Prep School staff coach the school teams but, in addition to this, the girls are also supported by members of the Senior School games department. This ensures continuity of coaching throughout the entire school and input from the highest level.

All girls enjoy the opportunity to play representative sport, regardless of individual ability. There is a full and extensive programme of fixtures in all sports including individual fixtures and multi-yeam tournaments, including those hosted by the Prep School.

All Year 7 and 8 girls are invited to join pre-season training and an annual tour to Scotland to encourage the further development of the standard of play and to provide an opportunity for the girls to enjoy being part of a team, regardless of their level of play.

Tournaments are held annually at Sedbergh and the Prep School teams are invited to several tournaments run by other schools. These events provide competition at the highest level available and improve their standard of play. In 2022/23, our U13 girls’ teams reached the national finals in cross country, hockey, cricket and netball.

cricket

There is currently an extensive programme in place for talented and promising cricketers and many of our girls (and boys) have played at District and County level. Our girls have played within the inagural Fibrus 100 tournament and we play host to county and district games and training throughout the year.

Our cricket programme is an all year development initiative run alongside the cricket coaching team from Sedbergh School and includes the use of video analysis and our indoor cricket nets throughout the off-season, for both one to one and group cricket sessions. There is also a lunchtime Junior cricket club run each week to introduce some of the younger pupils to this wonderful game!

Tennis

Tennis lessons continue to be incredibly popular with lessons delivered by Cumbria County Boys Coach Jon Griffin and his coaching team to pupils from Reception to Year 8. Lessons are available all year round and at present over 30% of pupils are undertaking weekly group or private lessons each week. The overall standard is constantly improving, with all four courts full during break, lunch and evenings during the summer term. Both boys and girls fixtures are played in the summer.
