Consistency of performance, especially on the track, throughout the week of events saw Winder and Robertson claim the House Athletics titles for 2016.
By the conclusion of Monday’s events Robertson had established a huge lead through their efforts in the Junior and Senior Girls competitions and only ever increased their lead in the week that followed. The boys’ competitions were far more fiercely fought and Sedgwick, Evans, School House and Winder all lead the way at some stage. However, Winder only placed outside of the top two places in three events (and only out of the top three places once) on the final day of competition to secure a well-earned victory.
Robertson’s Junior team was particularly impressive all week with the relay team breaking records in the 4 x 400m and 4 x 100m and setting, by default, a record in the new 4 x 200 m event. In addition, and perhaps most impressively, this team of Year 9s would also have won all of the Intermediate and Senior girls’ relays, would have set a record for the Senior 4 x 400 m and were 0.38 s behind the 4 x 100 m Senior record. Not to be outdone though, individually Melissa Sproul (Lupton Year 9) set records in both the 800 m and 1500 m and would also have won both the Intermediate and Senior competitions at these distances. Expect records to fall in the coming years!
Saturday’s events took place in bright sunshine in front of a large crowd and it was fitting that Ten-Mile record holder and Head of School John Campbell closed proceedings by winning the Open Mile in a new record time of 4 min 38 seconds.
