SEDBERGH INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL WELCOMES 100 INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Sedbergh International Summer School, in its 7th year, welcomed 100 young people aged 9 to 16 from all over Europe this summer. Students came from as far away as China and Kazakhstan to experience a taste of boarding school life at Casterton, Sedbergh Prep School.

The Sedbergh International Summer School runs for four weeks in one-week units across two age groups – juniors (9-12) and seniors (13-16), offering students the chance to stay for between two to four weeks. Formal English language lessons are led by experienced CELTA qualified teachers and learning is based around a weekly theme, in and out of the classroom.

Highlights for this year included visits to Liverpool and York, Chester Zoo, High Wires in Kendal, and the inaugural ISS ‘Masterchef’ competition, which was hugely popular.

Sedbergh School Bursar Peter Marshall said: “We are delighted to see the course growing in numbers each year, with Sedbergh School’s reputation for first-class pastoral care and teaching attracting young people from all over the world.

For many, this is their first time away from home, or their first visit to England. Casterton is a beautiful, safe location that offers so many opportunities in terms of activities in the great outdoors.

Learning English in such an inspiring location not only promotes the learning of language skills but also exposes students to some beautiful British countryside and to British culture.

We also build leadership skills into the activities programme as two of the core values of a British boarding school are leadership and team work.”

Elena, from Spain, said: “My experience in Sedbergh was incredible, I really had a good time. I met a lot of people from around the world like Italy, Russia and France. The lessons and activities are such good fun and you learn a lot. I was never bored and was always in good company.”

Parents from Germany said: “My son, Jonas, is back home and honestly, he misses Sedbergh ISS; the super teachers, the fantastic staff and all his friends. He had a great time.”

Parents from Italy said: “The course completely satisfied all of the expectations we had for Sofia. She improved her English, particularly her spoken English, and when she arrived, she was welcomed into a very nice atmosphere where she met a lot of new friends from different countries. I’d like to say that it has been an important and formative experience in her growth and maturity.”
