Sedbergh Pupils Help Aspiring Sailors

Sedbergh School pupils assisted at an open day on Killington Reservoir on Sunday, helping members of the public sample the joys of dinghy sailing.

The ‘Try Sailing in May’ event saw 65 people out on the water, guided by pupils from the school, as well as members of Kendal Sea Cadets, Kentdale Scouts and Killington Sailing Association.
The event was organised by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), the national governing body for sailing.

Sedbergh’s Sailing Coach, Myles Ripley, described the day as ‘very successful’, with possibly a record number of members of the public attending, and noted that it could not have happened without the enthusiastic engagement of pupils Louis Gunning (Evans, Year 11), Sam Gunning (Evans, Year 9), Walter Keegan (Hart, Year 12) and Geordan Moss (Winder, Year 12). Geordan Moss (Winder, Year 12) and Harry Tarleton (Hart, Year 9).

As well as Mr Ripley, two other members of staff – Tracey Gunning and Richard Parker – also assisted at the event.

Mr Ripley noted that some of the helper pupils wanted to become officially qualified dinghy instructors.

He said, ‘This experience of taking people out for a sail will be invaluable for their experience. Some of them have assisted at this day in previous years and were keen to help again so clearly it shows they value the experience and fun that they can afford to others.’
