SEDBERGH SCHOOL REMEMBERS THE FALLEN

More than 550 pupils, staff and Old Sedberghians met on Sunday morning for a poignant Service of Remembrance, held around the School’s Victoria Cross Memorial.

Colonel Mark Kenyon from the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment attended and members of the Combined Cadet Force, who are badged to the same regiment, gave a salute. Sarah Long (R), 15, from Brampton, played the Last Post and Reveille in challenging weather conditions and Head of School John Campbell (SH), 17, from Lincolnshire, read from the Gospel of St Matthew 5: 1-12.

A smaller, separate service of remembrance took place at the recently restored memorial to the six Old Sedberghians who fell in the South African 1899 to 1902 Boer War.

Headmaster of Sedbergh School, Andrew Fleck, said: “Remembrance Sunday is an important moment in the school year when we stop and reflect on those who have given their lives in the service of others.

The School was joined by large numbers of former pupils, parents and friends at a moving service in weather which reminded us of the conditions those young soldiers endured.”
