Job Title: Maintenance with Plumbing Experience
Location: Sedbergh School

Sedbergh School are seeking to appoint a Maintenance Assistant with Plumbing experience to join their hardworking maintenance team.
We are looking for hardworking individuals with a passion for plumbing to undertake general and specialist plumbing work across our two state-of-the-art campuses.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in a team, and be willing to provide support to other team members with general maintenance tasks. These may include manual handling and portering tasks, as well as completing minor repairs to our prestigious boarding houses and school buildings.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
General Plumbing Work
- To undertake general plumbing work on all school properties, to include installations, repairs or modifications as necessary
- Identify, report the need for minor and major repairs followed by action to resolve
- Carry out general maintenance works posted on the helpdesk and as directed by the Clerk of Works and Maintenance and Helpdesk Supervisor;
- To liaise with the Heads, Senior Management Team and other members of staff within the school and report any matters as necessary to the immediate line manager.
- To provide a service to the school and maintain a good customer relationship as a priority.
Health and Safety
- Ensure that routine housekeeping of the work areas around the school, the workshops and vehicles; keeping them clean, tidy, safe and legal.
- Ensure the safe security and upkeep of tools and equipment, including the maintenance of any relevant records.
- Ensure that all work is performed in accordance with the requirements of Health and Safety and other relevant legislation.
- Ensure that Risk Assessments are undertaken, documented, adhered to and regularly reviewed.
- Report near miss events immediately
- Ensure the safe storage and monitoring of any COSHH items.
- To assist the Clerk of Works with delegated work as required.
- To use school IT systems including the Maintenance Helpdesk to manage jobs.
- To assist colleagues as necessary during busy periods.
- Attend relevant staff meetings, other meetings, and training and development as required by the post.
- Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to safeguarding (child protection), health safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
- Contribute to the ethos of the school.
- Undertake such other general maintenance duties as requested from time to time in accordance with the grade of the role.
- Be prepared to cover weekend call out duty when requested – rotational with other team members
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
The following are essential criteria:
- A minimum qualification of at least an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in plumbing, preferably having served a general plumbing apprenticeship.
- An understanding of health and safety management, including risk assessments to ensure all activities are carried out in a safe way.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in dealing with staff at all levels.
- The ability to prioritise workload and manage competing deadlines/demands and use initiative in a variety of situations to manage the client (school) expectations.
- The ability to maintain accurate records to ensure compliance with all statutory and non-statutory regulations and guidelines.
- Physically fit to stand, bend, lift and carry heavy goods in accordance with the manual handling requirements of the role.
- Flexible, likes working in a team and able to work on their own initiative.
- To have a working knowledge of IT systems in order to use basic Microsoft Office tools and access and update jobs generated by the Maintenance Helpdesk and use the School Hub
- Full driving licence – the post will require some driving
- An understanding of safeguarding (child protection) – explained during interview and inductions
- An empathy with the ethos and values of the school.
- Willingness to learn new skills
The following are desirable criteria:
- Another trade skill to a good DIY level at least.
- Experience of Health and Safety issues associated within a school environment.
- Experience in a similar school/maintenance role.

Job Title: Grounds Person (Sports Turf)
Location: Sedbergh & Casterton School

Sedbergh School is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our busy Estates Department as a full time Grounds Person.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience working with sports turf.
The ground staff team of Sedbergh School provide pupils, staff and visitors to the School with sports and amenity facilities commensurate with the School’s long standing position as a leading Independent School and major sporting institution.
The duties of a Grounds Person will be wide and varied and it is not intended to cover every duty on this list; it is anticipated that the duties may change from time to time
Duties will include:
- All aspects of grass pitch maintenance and preparation including but not limited to gang mowing, pitch marking, sand spreading, wicket preparation, rolling;
- Preparation and maintenance of cricket wickets;
- Maintenance works to the all-weather playing surface;
- General sports facility care and preparation including hard surface tennis and netball courts and athletics facilities;
- Estate work including hedging, fencing, and other general duties estate work as required;
- Maintenance of clearing paths and roads during autumn and winter;
- Litter picking;
- The use and maintenance of hand tools and basic light machinery and plant;
- The use of cylinder and rotary mowers, strimmers, leaf blowers;
- Adjustments of mower height and quality of cut, etc. Oil level checks and check for damage to any mower;
- To respond to emergencies and assist other departments i.e. cricket, golf as directed by the Grounds Manager, Head Gardener or Estates Bursar;
- To be aware of Health and Safety requirements noting that all duties must be carried out to comply with current Health & Safety at Work legislation;
- To ensure all equipment, machinery and buildings are secure;
- To keep the mess rooms, tool sheds and staff toilets clean and tidy;
- To be aware of and report any security risks posed within the school;
- To apply chemicals where appropriate; (PA 6 certificate is preferred but not essential as training can be given)
- Driving tractors and other associated vehicles with trailers;
- To assist with School Events planning and set up and assist the maintenance team or work within other department of the Estate as required. Reporting The Grounds Person will form part of the ground staff team under the direction of the Grounds Manager.
