CUMBRIA SCHOOLS ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Saturday 11th June a strong contingent of Sedbergh School athletes travelled to Copeland Stadium in Whitehaven to represent the South Lakeland District at the Cumbrian Schools Athletics Championships.

Providing the largest number of athletes from one school, the weather held out as they nobly led South Lakeland to a comfortable win over the other districts, showing true Sedbergh competitive spirit. A number of National entry times and distances were recorded, making athletes eligible for selection to represent Cumbria Schools at both the forthcoming Northern and National Schools Competitions.

Highlights of the day included Ben Burridge breaking the championship best performance in the Junior Boys’ long jump with a first round leap of 5.90m and John Campbell winning the 2000m steeplechase and 3000m double, the latter in a school record time of 8 minutes and 59.6 seconds.

Other notable event winners included Fraser Jones (800m), Josh Hodge (Javelin), Massimiliano Brighetti (Javelin), Emily Dignan (Hurdles) and Ella Telford (Hurdles and Javelin). Highly competitive performances were also posted by Elle Heathcote (Long Jump), Alex Duckitt (200m), Josh Hodge (Long Jump) and Joe Bird (3000m and 2000m s/c).

A big congratulations should go to all athletes who travelled and competed admirably for both Sedbergh and the South Lakeland District, as well as the 14 athletes who have subsequently gained selection to represent Cumbria Schools at the Northern Counties on Saturday 18th June in Middlesborough.
